FateFlip: Washed Ashore
review by K
Live out your Tom Hanks Cast Away fantasy in FateFlip: Washed Ashore! In this FateFlip game, you are a sailor who has been stranded on a deserted island and must make choices throughout the game to survive and eventually escape the island. With 13 different endings, and an endless number of choices, you’ll be wanting to play this over and over again.
In Washed Ashore, you have 3 main stats to keep track of while you play. These stats will change in each chapter of the game. In chapter 1, the 3 stats are Energy, Safety, and Food. In chapters 2 and 3, you will be introduced to new stats to keep track of. During the game, the cards will prompt you to either add or subtract from these 3 stats. In some cases, dropping to zero in any of these can be fatal for your character and end the game. Each card has different symbols to signify whether you need to discard the card, or flip it in a certain direction. Each card also has different choices that take either an immediate effect or a delayed effect that you will find out later on in the game. There are different items your character can collect throughout the game as well that can help with decisions on the cards; some of these items include a knife, a campfire, or a rope. Certain decisions will prompt you to discard one of your items, so choose carefully!
This is a small-box, solo, choose-your-own-adventure-style game where your choices have consequences. I played this game 3 times and got 3 different endings, and I plan to keep playing more until I can finally make the right choices to survive and escape the island. It is moderately easy to pick up on the sequence of play, and there is a symbol key in the instruction booklet to guide you on how to navigate the game. This game is a great choice for a player who enjoys story-driven games on the go! You could even opt to play Washed Ashore with multiple people, taking turns making choices or coming to a consensus on how to move forward and survive.
